Chiropractic Clinic

Strength for Life® chiropractic services are offered in two separate locations, one in Easthampton and the other in Northampton.  The Easthampton office is within the SFL Health & Fitness Center, Suite 125 of the Eastworks Building, which also houses the Registry of Motor Vehicles, at 116 Pleasant Street.  This office is especially convenient for those chiropractic patients who also want to exercise in a well-equipped strength training facility.  It is staffed by Dr. Josef Arnould and Dr. Roger Berman.

The Northampton office, Chiropractic Associates of Northampton, is now located at 41 Locust Street, across the street from Cooley Dickinson Hospital.  In addition to Dr. Arnould and Dr. Berman, Dr. Tim Molitoris provides chiropractic care full-time in this office.

Together, these two offices make chiropractic care available to patients from: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday & Thursday; on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon; and on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for urgent appointments.

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is one of the oldest, largest and most unique natural healthcare professions.  There are approximately 100,000 doctors of chiropractic (D.C.s) practicing in hundreds of different countries throughout the world.

The primary purpose of chiropractic healthcare is the diagnosis and correction of abnormal function in the joints and muscles of the human body, especially in the spine.  Normally our joints and muscles are flexible, allowing us to perform thousands of different bodily motions every day.  Sometimes, however, normal fluid movements of specific joints become restricted or irregular.  Such deviations in joint function are termed subluxations.  The causes of subluxations are many:  injuries; lack of exercise; loss of strength; poor posture or bad work habits; worn shoes; an old mattress; repetitive motion injuries, etc.  Abnormally restricted joint movement frequently leads to other health problems, such as tightness or spasms in adjacent muscles, swelling and pain in the joints, and numbness or weakness in our limbs.  If allowed to persist for an extended time, such aberrant motion can cause premature joint degeneration and even permanent disability.

Chiropractic Treatment

The primary treatment method of chiropractic healthcare is an adjustment (also known as specific spinal manipulation).  An adjustment is a very short and precise stretching movement applied to the connective tissues of a subluxated joint which, in turn, allows normal function to resume in the adjacent muscles and nerves.  In addition to adjustments, doctors of chiropractic utilize other important natural methods of physical treatment to help each patient make a strong healing response.  Foremost among these are rehabilitation exercises designed to improve muscle and nerve function.  When performed on a daily basis, these exercises not only speed up one’s recovery, they also help to prevent subsequent episodes of similar problems.  Perhaps above all, when we perform strengthening and stretching exercises each day, we wake up feeling energetic and ready to excel in every challenge we face.

Spinal Fitness

The most outstanding feature of the healthcare we offer is the degree to which we integrate traditional chiropractic with therapeutic exercise.  We endeavor to help each patient improve his or her level of spinal fitness, meaning that the muscles and joints of the neck and back are strong and supple.  Those of us who perform strengthening and flexibility exercises on a regular basis are much healthier than those of us who do not.  Performing exercises with precision and grace increases our functional health, that is, our ability to execute the required and desired physical activities of daily life without injuring ourselves.  Therefore, on virtually every office visit we teach and review home exercises with every patient.  Our goal is to help you become, to the best of your ability, the primary person in charge of your own health.  The combination of chiropractic and exercise creates the foundation upon which you can build your personal health excellence.

Meet the Doctors

Dr. Roger Berman is a graduate of Northwestern College of Chiropractic.  A native of Natick, Mass., Dr. Berman has been practicing in western Mass. for over 20 years.  Dr. Berman uses both traditional and lower force chiropractic techniques, a variety of muscle and soft tissue therapies, physiotherapies, and exercises, with the goal of freeing up and conditioning the spine to function at its best.  In addition to spinal adjusting, he specializes in adjusting the joints of the arms and legs, and is especially proficient at working with chronic ankle and foot problems.

Dr. Josef Arnould received his doctorate in chiropractic in 1983 from Palmer College of Chiropractic.  He holds a B.A. from Princeton University and an M.Ed. from Framingham State College.  Since 1984 he has practiced chiropractic in Northampton and Easthampton.  He has been on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Chiropractic Society since 1986, serving as president from 2007 to 2009.  He is the author of Stronger After 40, a comprehensive textbook on strength training as healthcare.
